An Erased Poem by Billy Collins

“It wasn’t easy, by any means… I had to work very hard on it… But in the end it really worked.
I liked the result. I felt it was a legitimate work of art, created by the technique of erasing.”
–Richard Rauschenberg, talking about “An Erased Drawing by De Kooning”.

The name of the author is
followed by
which suddenly becomes you.

Long ago, you kissed names goodbye,
and watched equation pack,
and even now as you memorize order,
something is slipping
the address of the capital of
whatever is you
in some obscure corner.

You can recall
your own way to oblivion where you will join those
who forgot to
rise in the middle of the night.

No wonder the moon seems to have drifted
out of love.
